The Byrd Theater - A Haunt in the Heart of Carytown
April 24th, 2024
Built in Carytown in 1928, the Byrd Theater opened on Christmas Eve to much excitement as the city welcomed “Richmond’s Movie Palace”. The theater was named after William Byrd II, the founder of the city almost two centuries prior to the opening of the state-of-the-art theater. The Byrd opened at a pivotal time in theatrical entertainment, as it was not only one of the first theaters to ever be equipped for sound motion pictures, but it also features a (still working) classic Wurlitzer pipe organ.
The Byrd Theater has been special to many people over the years, perhaps explaining why it is still the home to some spirits who still take in shows alongside the living guests that flock to this landmark. Of all those suspected of lingering on in the space, the most notable is Robert Coulter, the manager of the Byrd Theatre from its opening in 1928 to his retirement in 1971. Over the years, many moviegoers have reported feeling like they’re being watched from the balcony, and sometime when they look, they will find somebody sitting there. At least until they vanish before their eyes… Even for those who do not see anyone, the overbearing feeling of being watched remains. Most suspect that it is Robert, still making sure that guests are enjoying the theatre he devoted 43 years of his life to.
In addition to Mr. Coulter, some believe that the women’s restroom has the lingering presence of a little girl. Paranormal investigators that have explored the theater have picked up audio recordings of a girl laughing in this recessed space on the left side of the lobby. This seems to corroborate the experiences of many women who have gone to use the facilities and been surprised by this mischievous and unexpected visitor.
For those who visit this beautiful landmark (and we strongly recommend that you do), just be prepared to not only enjoy the beautiful architecture and a show, but to also be accompanied by some spirits from days gone by.
